New Cruises on the Waterways of Holland and Belgium and Along the Rhine and Moselle Rivers
Smithsonian Journeys, the travel program of the Smithsonian Institution and a leader in enriching, small-group exploration, has announced its 2028 river cruise collection in collaboration with AmaWaterways, the award-winning river cruise line renowned for immersive cultural experiences and top-notch service. The program features 50 departures across 15 itineraries, including two new voyages for 2028. The “Waterways of Holland and Belgium”cruise explores the rivers, canals and waterways that have shaped the history, culture and prosperity of the Low Countries, connecting travelers with historic cities, celebrated artistic traditions and landscapes shaped by centuries of life along the water. “Cruising the Rhine and Moselle Rivers” traces the course of two iconic European rivers, revealing dramatic river valleys, terraced vineyards, fairy-tale castles and towns whose histories are intertwined with these waterways. Drawing on the Smithsonian’s 180 years as the world’s largest museum, education and research complex, each itinerary is enriched by expert-led lectures and discussions, and experiences designed to foster deeper appreciation of the destination.

In addition to the two new voyages, 13 expertly curated itineraries showcasing Europe’s most breathtaking and historic rivers, including the Danube, Rhine, Douro, Seine and Rhône, as well as three sailings along the Mekong through Cambodia and Vietnam, will return in 2028. Each cruise features exclusive excursions and opportunities to engage with a diverse roster of Smithsonian Journeys Experts, from art historians and archaeologists to scientists, anthropologists and other leading scholars. Guests may also extend their journey with optional pre- and post-cruise land programs, hosted by an AmaWaterways cruise manager, for deeper exploration of the cultural, historical and regional traditions that define each destination.
“The continued popularity of our river cruise program reflects travelers’ desire for experiences that are both enriching and effortless,” said Walter Littlejohn, senior vice president of Smithsonian Journeys. “Our 2028 collection introduces two enriching new itineraries while continuing to offer our most popular journeys throughout Europe and Southeast Asia. With two Smithsonian Journeys Experts accompanying every departure, guests gain unique perspectives on the history, culture, art and traditions of each destination, creating a travel experience that is as intellectually engaging as it is memorable.”
“The expertise and perspective that Smithsonian Journeys brings to every itinerary make these cruises truly special,” said Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways. “We’ve always believed that the best way to experience a destination is to connect with its people, stories and culture, and our partnership with Smithsonian Journeys gives guests even more opportunities to do that. Alongside the comfort and warm hospitality of an AmaWaterways river cruise, guests can enjoy the insights of Smithsonian Journeys Experts, bringing even more depth and perspective to the travel experience.”
The Smithsonian Journeys and AmaWaterways alliance of river cruises augment the Smithsonian’s robust collection of small-group land journeys, small-ship ocean cruises, cultural stays, active journeys, private jet trips and tailor-made journeys for the independent traveler. These river cruise journeys are available to book by visiting the Smithsonian Journeys/AmaWaterways website or calling (877) 338-8687.
