Over a million euros will be used towards the advance of its sustainability strategy, which incorporates environmental, social and ethical criteria in all projects and initiatives.
Palma, May 24th, 2022– Grupo Piñero, the Spanish tourism company that owns Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts, with more than 40 years of history, is moving forward with its sustainability strategy by creating a Circular Economy Strategic Plan, focused on adapting its management to climate risks and ensuring zero landfill. Simultaneously, Grupo Piñero is investing more than 1,520,000 euros over the course of 2022, as part of their 2019-2024 Energy Efficiency Plan.
In order to consolidate a circular production model that achieves a 50% reduction in waste by 2030 and guarantees zero landfill by 2050, since 2016 the company has been working on the implementation of a Recyclable Waste Management System. Thanks to this program, Grupo Piñero has managed to recover more than 10,000 tons of recyclable waste in five years. A figure that also means a reduction of around one third of the amount of waste that ends up in a landfill.
“The execution of different ecological projects is on the works, such as the creation of a circular economy department, composting plants in all their hotels and resorts, and in the Cayo Levantado Resort project, a bio digestion plant for organic waste and another for sorting recyclable waste,” said Isabel Piñero, Grupo Piñero’s CSO (Chief Sustainability Officer). “These results demonstrate that at Grupo Piñero we continue to be faithful to our firm commitment to protect and preserve our planet through recycling.”
The company is also leading several initiatives, including the development of a new hot water distribution system, to which it will allocate a significant portion of the budget, and with which it intends to reduce the emission of 1,722 tons of Co2.This investment represents a step forward in Grupo Piñero’s business management model which, through innovative technology, is improving the efficiency and sustainability of all its processes to guarantee a better environmental performance.
The company has been working toward this goal for some time and, in 2021 achieved a 15% reduction in energy consumption per stay and a 12.6% reduction in carbon emissions compared to the previous year.
Isabel Piñero, the Group’s CSO, adds: “With this operation we are strengthening our sustainability strategy and going one step further in our commitment to energy efficiency. This allows us to progress toward the model of responsible and sustainable tourism that we aspire to lead, always aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations.”
Within the framework of its new 2022-2030 Sustainability Strategic Plan, Grupo Piñero continues its efforts on Energy and Climate. In this sense, the company is promoting a mobility model that is efficient and environmentally friendly, thus, aiming to achieving 100% sustainable transportation. It is also a step forward in the decarbonization process of the hotels, which will, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30%. To this end, Grupo Piñero is committed to shifting the energy mix toward a 100% renewable energy supply.
