The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland Earns Prestigious Michelin One Key Award

Luxury property recognized for exceptional design, service, and harmony with Iceland’s natural landscape

The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland has been awarded a Michelin One Key, joining an elite list of hotels around the world recognized for offering exceptional guest experiences. The honor also extends to its sister property, Kerlingarfjöll Highland Base, marking a milestone moment for Icelandic hospitality as among the first recipients in the Nordic region.

Since opening in 2018, The Retreat has set a new standard for luxury in Iceland, seamlessly blending nature, architecture, and wellness within the island’s dramatic geothermal landscape. This excellence has now been formally acknowledged by Michelin’s newly established Key rating system, which evaluates hotels based on design, service, personality, and overall guest experience through anonymous inspections.

Nestled within the iconic Blue Lagoon, The Retreat features 60 suites, a subterranean spa carved into ancient lava formations, and a private lagoon fed by the site’s renowned geothermal seawater. Guests also enjoy exclusive access to Moss Restaurant, one of only three Michelin-starred restaurants in Iceland, where nature-inspired cuisine meets world-class culinary artistry.

This recognition places The Retreat among the world’s most distinguished hotels—properties that offer not just luxury, but a deep connection to place, immersing guests in Iceland’s raw beauty and geothermal wonder. For travelers seeking authenticity, serenity, and exceptional service, The Retreat offers a stay that transcends the ordinary.

Accommodation at The Retreat begins at $1,836 per night for a Lava View Junior Suite.

About the Michelin key

he Michelin Key is a new award from the Michelin Guide for hotels, similar to how the Michelin Star recognizes restaurants. It highlights hotels that offer exceptional experiences by excelling in areas like architecture, design, service, personality, and value. The Keys are awarded after anonymous inspections by Michelin experts and can be one, two, or three Keys, with three Keys signifying an “extraordinary stay”.
