QUITO, Ecuador (September 1, 2023) — While recently hosting the 68th Meeting of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Regional Commission for the Americas, Ecuador had a clear and exciting message for attendees around the world: the country is more open than ever to new business opportunities.
The UNWTO meeting was held this summer and included delegations from 20 nations. During their participation, representatives from Ecuador highlighted the country’s robust tourism recovery after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, its famous biodiversity, and the opportunities it provides for every type of traveler.
The event also provided the opportunity to present Tourism Doing Business, Investing in Ecuador, a guide aimed at investors and which seeks to attract foreign investment to the country. The 162-page document, available online for free, is the result of a cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Tourism of Ecuador, UNWTO (a specialized agency of the United Nations), and the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF).
The document highlights some main reasons to invest in Ecuador, including its vast natural resources, strategic location, modern infrastructure, and growing economically active population. It also mentions the country’s investment landscape, competitive advantages, and international tourism revenue over the past 12 years.
Since taking care of the planet has become one of the main priorities for travel providers and customers, the report also includes an overview of the nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the steps it takes to achieve them. This aspect is especially relevant for a destination such as Ecuador, where around 20% of the national territory is part of a protected natural area.
Finally, Tourism Doing Business, Investing in Ecuador includes a list of 10 projects being developed in the country and expected to bring in additional tourism revenue in the coming years.
“We want our country to lead Latin America in a new form of tourism that is more natural, more sustainable, more inclusive, and above all, more beneficial for both tourists and resident communities, guaranteeing at all times the protection of the environment, local populations and the tourist as a consumer,” says Niels Olsen, Ecuador’s Minister of Tourism, in his introduction to the guide.
Having demonstrated its suitability for hosting world-class events such as the UNWTO meeting, Ecuador is poised to host more gatherings, such as AdventureELEVATE Latin America, which will be held next year in the capital city of Quito.
