A European Vacation on a Grand Scale: Cycling and Cruising Along the Danube River

VBT partners with river cruise leader Emerald Waterways on a new 2019 tour from Nuremberg to Budapest

Williston, VT – June 13, 2018 – Next year, travelers looking for a unique experience can sail the fabled Danube, disembark to ride the continent’s longest riverside bike path—the famed EuroVelo 6—and go slow to immerse in the gentle scenic hills, sylvan forests, stunning wine country, and bike-friendly cultural capitals in the heart of Europe.

VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations Waterways tours allow guests to unpack just once for seven nights of indulgent comfort and promise an authentic biking and floating experience. With more time to enjoy the amenities of a “floating home,” VBT Waterways ensures camaraderie and ample time to delve into the local culture and explore Europe’s most idyllic corners.

For 2019, VBT has partnered with Emerald Waterways, among the finest river cruise providers, on a new tour that features a bicycle vacation from Nuremberg to Budapest on a grand scale along with accommodations onboard one of its deluxe floating “Star-Ships”. Each group of up to 24 VBT guests can experience the best of both worlds while on tour, from the day’s cycling adventure and exclusive VBT activities to choosing one of the ship’s included excursions instead—like a guided walking tour that includes one of the Danube’s oldest bridges.

Danube River Cruise: Nuremberg to Budapest
Offering easy riverside terrain with some mild climbing, the daily rides are primarily on paved or gravel bike paths in both urban and rural areas. Guests tour medieval hamlets, visit elegant Baroque treasures, and enjoy full days in Vienna and Budapest. Culinary highlights include sampling Austria’s Wachau Valley wines and Bavarian beers brewed at local abbeys. Each evening, guests return to the comfort of a deluxe river ship to enjoy cocktails, dinner, and evening activities on board. A particular highlight is Day 7, where guests explore Vienna, renowned as one of Europe’s most bicycle-friendly cities. Guests cycle Danube Island, a 13-mile-long strip where scenic vistas and quiet riding showcase Vienna at its finest. The day’s longer option leads to the spectacular Schönbrunn Palace, the imperial summer residence of the Habsburgs and one of Austria’s most significant cultural treasures. Prices per person start at $4,995, including airfare.

Offering cultural immersion at the heart of every vacation, VBT provides travelers with the opportunity to both move their body and fully engage the senses with each turn of the pedal, enriching the outdoor experience and creating awareness of the most nuanced sensory impressions.
