This week on Viking.TV is Explorer’s Week – with content focusing on discovering explorers from past and present day.   On Thursday, Anne Diamond will interview famed adventurers and educators, Liv Arnesen and Ann Bancroft. Individually, Bancroft and Arnesen have accomplished many firsts for women and together in 2001, they became the first women to ski across Antarctica. Additional sessions throughout the week include a study of the Vikings (Tuesday); Lady Carnarvon At Home at Highclere (Friday) will share more on the 5th Earl of Carnarvon’s findings in Egypt; and learn more about the Scott Polar Research Institute and their work with Viking’s new expedition voyages (Monday).

  • Monday, June 8Museum Monday will welcome, Professor Julian Dowdeswell from the Scott Polar Research Institute. Join Professor Dowdeswell as he introduces the Institute and shares more of the exciting work with Viking’s new expedition voyages.

 

  • Tuesday, June 9Learn more about the Vikings. Acclaimed historian, Dr. Fenella Bazin will discuss the real Vikings including their expeditions, daily life, civilization and legacy.

 

  • Wednesday, June 10 – Explore the heroic, yet tragic, Terra Nova expedition through photos by Herbert Ponting. This week’s Arts & Music Wednesday, Alastair Miller will discuss Ponting and his photos documenting the 19th century expedition to become the first men to reach the South Pole.

 

  • Thursday, June 11 – Explorer’s Week continues with an interview with famed adventurers and educators, Liv Arnesen and Ann Bancroft. Individually, Bancroft and Arnesen have accomplished many firsts for women and together in 2001, they became the first women to ski across Antarctica.
    • More about Liv Arnesen and Ann Bancroft: Arnesen, a native Norwegian, became the first woman in the world to ski solo and unsupported to the South Pole in 1994. Bancroft is the first woman to successfully ski to both poles. This past January, Viking was honored to announce Arnesen and Bancroft as ceremonial godmothers to Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, respectively.

 

  • Friday, June 12 At Home at Highclere, Lady Carnarvon will share more on George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon and famous Egyptologist, who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun with his renowned archaeological colleague, Howard Carter. Today, Highclere Castle is home to a beautiful collection of antiquities and the Egyptian Exhibition.
