Squaremouth Reveals The Top 6 Questions Travelers Are Asking This Summer

PETERSBURG, FL, July 11, 2025 — Traveler anxiety has steadily been on the rise this summer, due to concerns over flight delays, airline disruptions, and weather complications. With the busy summer travel season in full swing, these concerns continue to mount.

Squaremouth, the nation’s largest travel insurance marketplace, reveals six pressing questions travelers are asking and explains how travel insurance can help ease those concerns.

What steps should I take if my flight is delayed?

If your flight is significantly delayed, you can be covered by your plan’s Travel Delay coverage. This benefit can reimburse you for meals, hotel accommodations, and transportation expenses during a delay of at least 3-12 hours, depending on the plan.

Be sure to keep receipts for all of your purchases and get documentation from your airline explaining the delay. This will be needed when you file a travel insurance claim for reimbursement.

Am I covered if my flight is delayed due to airline staffing issues?

You can be, but it depends on the length of the delay and the coverage in your plan. Most plans include Travel Delay coverage, but the requirements vary. To be covered for airline staffing issues, look for a plan that covers any delay of a common carrier and kicks in after a 3-hour delay. This will give you the most flexible coverage in the event of a delay.

I’m worried about travel disruptions caused by natural disasters. Is this covered by travel insurance?

Natural disasters, like landslides, wildfires, and hurricanes, are covered by travel insurance. These events are covered under the Hurricane & Weather benefit, which can reimburse your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel or cut your trip short due to a natural disaster.

I’m concerned about a hurricane hitting my home while I’m traveling. Am I covered?

Yes, this is typically covered. Traveling during the summer can bring severe weather, either at your destination or your home, depending on where you live. If you live in a hurricane-prone area and a hurricane hits home while you’re away, your travel insurance plan’s Trip Interruption coverage can reimburse your remaining trip expenses and refund the cost of buying a new flight to return home.

What if my destination’s border is unexpectedly closed before my trip?

Unfortunately, coverage for unexpected border closures is pretty limited. If you’re planning a trip and you’re concerned your destination may close its borders, we recommend a policy with Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage. CFAR plans cover most of your trip expenses if you cancel for a reason not covered by standard Trip Cancellation, like a border closure. This gives you the most possible flexibility when it comes to a sudden cancellation.

How do I get coverage for a pre-existing condition while I’m traveling?

Pre-existing condition coverage is one of the most sought-after travel medical insurance benefits. However, this benefit is time-sensitive and is only available for purchase for a limited time after you book your trip. To qualify for pre-existing condition coverage, you need to buy your policy within 10-21 days of your first trip payment, depending on the plan. This can be anything from your flights, a hotel reservation, or a tour.
