Squaremouth Awards $30,000 in Top-Secret Travel Insurance Policy Reading Contest

Here’s Why They Did It

ST. PETERSBURG Fla. March 5, 2019 —  Travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, understands that most travelers don’t read their policies, an oversight that can sometimes lead to a lack of coverage clarity and denied claims. In an effort to highlight the importance of reading policy information, Squaremouth held a top-secret contest that culminated in a $10,000 grand prize and $20,000 in donations.

Squaremouth launched the Pays to Read contest on February 11, 2019, with the aim of rewarding a grand prize of $10,000 to the first person to find hidden text within their policy documentation. Much to Squaremouth’s surprise, the contest, which was slated to last an entire year, was won in just 23 hours by Donelan Andrews, a consumer economics teacher from Georgia.

“We launched the Pays to Read contest to remind people to read their policy summary so they can ensure they are getting the policy they want, or cancel their policy for a full refund,” says Squaremouth CEO Chris Harvey.

At the contest’s conclusion, Squaremouth also donated an additional $10,000 to Reading Is Fundamental, a children’s literacy charity. Inspired by Donelan’s commitment to her schools, Squaremouth made a surprise donation of $5,000 each to the two high schools where the winner teaches at in Georgia – Upson-Lee High School and Lamar County High School.

“Teaching students to read their contracts has always been close to my heart because of my consumer economics background,” Donelan says. “I always read every contract I sign. It really paid off for me this time!”
