Scenic’s Joni Rein addresses AVENUE Altruism Awards gathering at the UN, honoring Mission Blue’s Dr. Sylvia Earle

Boston, MA, November 2017 – Joni Rein, Scenic VP of Sales & Marketing USA, addressed an esteemed list of guests at this year’s AVENUE Altruism Awards, held last night at the United Nations in New York, and honoring the work of Dr. Sylvia Earle and her organization, Mission Blue. Joni shared the stage with Chinese film actress Sharon Kwok (who is also the Hong Kong Campaign Ambassador for NAT GEO Wild’s “I’m FINished with FINS”), Gabriele Goettsche-Wanli – Director of the UN Division for Ocean Affairs & the Law of the Sea, and Fabien Cousteau, who continued and expanded the work of his father into the Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning

Ms. Rein saluted Dr. Earle’s efforts, achievements and passion when it comes to both preserving the oceans and educating the rest of the world on what they can do to help. She also introduced Scenic’s efforts to follow the example set by Dr. Earle, with the introduction of the world’s first Discovery Yacht, Scenic Eclipse. The yacht’s design has incorporated numerous protective technologies including a dynamic positioning system so anchors are not needed in environmentally sensitive areas; the most efficient liquid fuel engines currently available – complying with EPA Tier 4/IMO Tier 3 standards; and a state-of-the-art waste water treatment system that allows for zero impact.

Dr. Earle founded Mission Blue to inspire action to explore and protect the ocean. A National Geographic Society Explorer-in-Residence, Dr. Earle, has been called “Her Deepness” by the New Yorker and the New York Times, “a Living Legend” by the Library of Congress, and first “Hero for the Planet” by Time magazine. She is a revered oceanographer, explorer, author, and lecturer. Currently, the Mission Blue alliance includes over 180 respected ocean conservation groups and like-minded organizations, from large multinational companies to individual scientific teams doing important research. At the heart of this effort is a global campaign to build public support for the protection of Hope Spots—special places that are vital to the health of the ocean.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours has grown over its 30-year history to include award-winning, all-inclusive escorted tours that take participants to many of the world’s most fascinating destinations; two award-winning river cruise lines – Scenic and Emerald Waterways; and, in 2018, the world’s first Discovery Yacht – Scenic Eclipse. Emerald Waterways’ seven Star Ships offer deluxe cruises in Europe, and the Mekong, while Scenic’s 15 Space Ships offer truly all-inclusive, five-star river cruises in the same destinations as well as the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar.
