July Year-Over-Year U.S. Travel Agency Air Ticket Sales Increase 69%

Month-Over-Month Total Sales Decrease After Surpassing 2019 Levels in June

 

ARLINGTON, Va. – August 18, 2022 – Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC) today released data showing ARC-accredited travel agency air ticket sales totaling $6.8 billion in July 2022, a 69% year-over-year increase from July 2021.* The average U.S. round-trip air travel ticket price was $555 in July 2022, up 21% from July 2021 and 8% lower than June 2022. This marks the second consecutive month of declining average ticket price.

 

Month over month, July 2022 results showed:

  • Total sales decreased 13%.
  • Total passenger trips down 8%.
  • U.S. domestic trips decreased 6%.
  • International trips decreased 10%.

 

“We’re seeing the monthly average ticket price decline earlier in the year than usual,” said Steve Solomon, chief commercial officer at ARC. “Looking ahead to the remainder of the year, we expect to see a continued increase in business travel as the summer vacation season winds down.”

 

Total passenger trips settled by ARC in July 2022 increased 18% year over year from 16.8 million to 19.9 million, led by a 50% year-over-year increase in international trips, which totaled 7 million. U.S. domestic trips increased 6% to 12.8 million over the same period.

 

EMD sales increased 90% year over year to $13,610,107. EMD transactions increased 58% to 239,779 over the same period.**

  • Results are based on monthly sales data ending July 31, 2022, from 10,657 U.S. retail and corporate travel agency locations, satellite ticket printing offices and online travel agencies. Results do not include sales of tickets purchased directly from airlines.
  • The average ticket price (USD) is for a round-trip ticket settled through ARC for an itinerary that included only U.S. domestic travel.

  • Passenger trips include the total number of passengers taking a trip from one airport to another using direct or connecting flights. Newly issued trips are added, and refunded trips are deducted to provide a net view of traveling passengers.
  • U.S. domestic passenger trips include the total number settled through ARC where the itinerary is wholly within the U.S. International passenger trips include the total number settled through ARC where some or all the travel occurs to airports outside the U.S. or originates outside the U.S.
  • Total sales are equal to the total amount paid for a ticket, which includes taxes and fees.
