More About the Oberammergau Passion Play
Recounting Jesus Christ’s final days on Earth, the dramatic spectacle will be performed 100+ times between mid-May and early October of 2022. The excitement mounts as travelers near the Ammergau Alps and the picture-perfect Bavarian village where the play has been taking place every 10 years since 1634. What is truly unbelievable is that the Passion Play is a local production, performed entirely by amateur actors who have been residents of the village for 20 years or more. When one enters Oberammergau, they notice the hustle and bustle surrounding the village, which prepares diligently for the influx of thousands of daily visitors. The 4,500-seat Passion Play Theater, the largest of its kind in the world, has an open-air stage that holds hundreds of people at a time and a roof that shelters the audience. Seats are set on an incline, so everyone has a good view. The play lasts approximately five hours and is divided into two parts by a three-hour break for eating, relaxing or exploring the village.
