Buenos Aires Tourism Booms With Increased Visitors, Ready For 2018

Over 183,000 North American tourists traveled to Buenos Aires from January to October 2017

Buenos Aires, Argentina – January 17, 2018 – International tourism is on the upswing in Buenos Aires as an estimated 1.55 million international tourists arrived through the city’s major airports, Ezeiza International Airport (EZE) and Aeroparque Jorge Newbery (AEP), from January to October 2017. The city has been meeting this demand, and greets the new year with new hotel openings and inaugural high-profile events in 2018.

During the 10-month period, 67,000 more tourists came through EZE and AEP airports, representing a year over year increase of 4.5 percent. The expansion in tourist visits is part of a strong cycle, with 15 months of sustained growth, a pattern not seen since before 2012.

Over 183,000 of these visitors were North Americans from the United States and Canada, coming to explore Buenos Aires for business and leisure. More than half of them stayed in the city’s hotels. Their top choices were luxury four and five-star properties, a category where Buenos Aires offers a broad range, which also saw a six percent increase in occupancy from international tourists in 2017.

Buenos Aires is rising to the challenge, with an expansion of hotel choices. Among the city’s newest hotels set to open this year include the Ker San Telmo and theMGallery by Sofitel. The family owned Ker Group’s latest property is in nostalgic San Telmo, the city’s fastest growing neighborhood, close to Puerto Madero, and accessible to some of the best restaurant and nightlife options. The sleekly designed hotel will open in March 2018 and will have 132 rooms, a health club with a swimming pool and spa, along with function rooms ideal for business and social events. The MGallery by Sofitel will open during the first quarter of 2018 and will be located in the diverse neighborhood of Retiro. The hotel will feature 113 rooms and will be the second AccorHotels property in the city and the 12th in Argentina.

Throughout 2018, the city will play host to some of the world’s most renowned events that will be sure to keep tourism numbers high this year. Some of the calendar highlights include Art Basel from September 11 – 16 – making Buenos Aires the first partner in the Art Basel Cities initiative – and the Summer Youth Olympic Games from October 6 – 18.
