Americans Show Their Love for Top Valentine’s Day Destinations

Warm Weather and Sunny Beaches Continue to Attract Americans This Valentine’s Day, while New Orleans Makes Its Debut on the Top 10 Domestic Destinations Catalog

Richmond, Virginia, January 18, 2024 – Love is in the air as Americans are catching both flights and feelings. According to Allianz Partners USA’s Top Valentine’s Day Destinations report, Americans are ready to celebrate their love by taking a trip overseas. Compared to the previous year, 2024 shows a rising demand for overseas travel with a 4% increase in international bookings and a 15% increase in Valentine’s Day travel searches overall.

After reviewing more than 900,000 itineraries* for roundtrip flights departing U.S. airports between Wednesday, February 7 and Monday, February 12, with a return date between Sunday, February 14 and Thursday, February 18, the travel insurance and assistance company noted that 70% of the itineraries are for domestic travel and 30% are for international trips. The data also revealed traveler’s top picks for a romantic getaway in honor of the sweet holiday.

Those planning to stay stateside are celebrating in the country’s sunnier locations. Florida remains a beloved destination for intimate retreats with Orlando, Miami and Fort Lauderdale taking the top three spots. Meanwhile, others are traveling to western states with trips to Phoenix (#4) and Las Vegas (#5), and making its debut on the roster, New Orleans slotted in at #6. Closing out the top domestic rankings are Salt Lake City (#7), Honolulu (#8), Fort Meyers (#9) and Los Angeles (#10).

Mexico continues to attract visitors to its popular, sunny shorelines. Cancun, San Jose del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta have once again rounded out the top three spots on the international roster. However, Mexico is not the only warm destination choice for a romantic couple’s retreat. The survey revealed that couples are also booking travel to Punta Cana (#4), Oranjestad (#5), Montego Bay (#6), U.S. Virgin Islands (#7), Liberia (Costa Rica) (#8), Nassau (#9) and San Jose (Costa Rica) (#10).

“It’s no surprise that after the holiday season, couples and ‘galentines’ are ready to leave the cold weather behind and take flight to palm-fringed beaches,” says Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA. “What better way to celebrate love than with a trip away from the regular everyday routine. For those who are choosing to get away this season, we recommend a travel insurance policy to help aid in a seamless trip, as with a policy in hand, you can rest assured you are protected in case of unexpected travel delays, cancellations and baggage loss.”
