VALÈNCIA, Spain (December 1, 2023) – València is ending the year on a celebratory note, having recently been featured as one of 25 global destinations in AFAR magazine’s “Where to Go in 2024” travel list. This Mediterranean city on the east of Spain has thus been positioned alongside destinations such as Sydney, Australia; Rome, Italy; Bhutan; and Norway, also included by the esteemed travel publication.
The AFAR article highlights València as the winning city of the 2024 European Green Capital award thanks to its earth-conscious initiatives and infrastructure, including a plan to become a carbon-neutral tourist destination in the next few years. València is also home to more than 120 miles of bicycle lanes and 20 miles of bicycle streets. This makes it an ideal destination for travelers seeking physical activity, surrounded by beautiful parks and open spaces.
One shining example of the city’s green areas is the Turia Garden, a linear park located on the site of a former riverbed and stretching over 5 miles. It is home to attractions such as Cabecera Park, Gulliver Park, Bioparc, and the City of Arts and Sciences.
As Spain’s third-largest city and metropolitan area, València also boasts many historical constructions, such as the Arab wall and the city Cathedral, which hosts what some experts believe to be the Holy Grail used in the Last Supper.
The capital of the Valencian Community is also home to UNESCO-recognized constructions and cultural activities. These include the Silk Exchange, renowned for its gothic architecture; the Fallas, a celebration that takes place every March featuring tradition, satire, and art; and the Water Court, a weekly activity in which representatives from nine communities meet outside the Cathedral of València to rule on matters of irrigation.
The city is also well known as the birthplace of paella. This dish has even inspired a competition every September during World Paella Day with the participation of chefs worldwide.
